My Welsh Roots

My grandmother was originally from Wales. She was born in Pembroke Dock, where her father worked at the Naval Dockyard. Her mother's side of the family was from Newport, Monmouthshire (now Gwent). So I have an interest in both these parts of Wales.

Pembroke Dock

My Howell family were blacksmiths from the village of New Moat, who were drawn to Pembroke Dock when the Naval Dockyard opened. They married into the Castle family of Carew. Thomas Castle (1795-1883) travelled from Pembrokeshire to work on the construction of canals.

There is more information on the history of Pembroke Dock at the Pembroke Dock Community Web Project. Pembroke Dock is in the modern county of Dyfed - the web site of Dyfed FHS contains many useful resources. Other useful sites include Graham Davies' Pembrokeshire Roots,

Newport, Monmouthshire

My Turberville ancestors came from Newport, where Thomas Edward Turberville was an accountant and schoolmaster. He married Mathilda Johns, the daughter of a local shipbuilder, John Johns. She was also the granddaughter of Richard Burton, a leading merchant of Newport. Thomas Edward was the son of Thomas Turberville, a Lock Keeper on the Monmouthshire canal.

If you have ancestors from Monmouthshire, I highly recommend Mike Johns' Monmouthshire Family History web site, which contains an Aladdin's Cave of resources for tracing your family in this ancient county. The Family History Society covering Monmouthshire is Gwent FHS - which has published indexes to most censuses as well as Monumental Inscriptions and Marriages. Their web site includes a handy cross-reference between all the parishes, registration districts & sub-districts.
