"I make no pretence of having, in
the following few pages, written an
exhaustive social history of Guernsey. My narrative is
but the outcome of a
wish expressed by members of my family that I would leave
them some
account of things that are no more and of people who have
passed away.
Having
drawn it up from memory, there may be some discrepancies,
yet I have earnestly endeavoured to render them as few as
possible.

So began the foreward to Hugo's book,
published in 1933, on his recollections of life in St.
Peter Port in the period 1865-1880. The contrast between
St. Peter Port of the 1930s and the late Victorian era
must have been as dramatic as the contrast between that
of today and the 1930s. The book mentions scores of
local characters - providing much material of interest to
family historians. It is for that reason, I have indexed
the book, and published it here.
Some of the stories include those of:-
- Mr Amies - a corpulent, rather short man with a
long grey beard, responsible for introducing
guano to the island.
(guano was the term for
Latin American bird droppings imported for use as
fertiliser)
- Mr. H. Turner - a bookbinder by day, who turned
private detective and returned a travelling trunk
to its rightful owner.
- Mr Trump & Mr. Bird, who used to light the
gas lamps in town every evening.
- Mrs Margaret Neve of Rouge Huis Avenue, who lived
to the age of 111.
If you find any members of your family mentioned here,
and would like to know what Hugo wrote about them, please
contact me.
