Index of Surnames in a book written about Guernsey in the period 1865-1880

George William Joseph Lewis Hugo was born in Guernsey in 1862, the son of Samuel George Hugo and Ellen Agnes Cage Fielder.
He practised as a Dental Surgeon from his residence at 15 Allez Street, St Peter Port.

He dedicated his book to his wife, Madelaine, "who, though not a Guernseywoman is enamoured of the island and its people".

In the foreword he says that "My narrative is but the outcome of a wish expressed by members of my family that I would leave them some account of things that are no more and of people who have passed away".

The book was published in 1934, and George died less than two years later in 1936.

His obituary in The Star newspaper said that "Mr Hugo was of a charming disposition which had endeared him to a large circle of friends and acquaintances". It also tells how George's father, Samuel, had moved to Guernsey from Cornwall.

(The above portrait is of George and Madelaine Hugo and their family taken in about 1907. I am very grateful to William Hugo Pickering, George's grandson, for this photo and permission to reproduce it here).
