My Castle family originate from Carew in Pembrokeshire (now Dyfed). Thomas Castle (1795-1883), the son of Thomas Castle and Martha née Rogers, was a labourer who travelled from Wales to Staffordshire to work on the construction of the Birmingham & Liverpool Junction Canal (see section on Canals). While he was living in Staffordshire, he met Esther Adderley, the daughter of shoemaker Joseph. Thomas & Esther returned to Pembrokeshire, and settled in Pembroke Dock, where they raised a family. Their eldest daughter, Martha, married Thomas Howell, a blacksmith.
