Guernsey Butchers : Widdicombe

Origin

Robert Widdicombe was born in Dartington in Devon in 1794, and learned the butcher's trade in Exeter before emigrated to Guernsey. In 1823, he married Mary Ann Rowe in the Town Church in Guernsey. Sadly, he died less than 3 years later. His young widow did her best to continue with their butcher's stall in Guernsey until at least 1833, but by 1835, she had returned to England and was claiming poor relief from the Overseers of the Poor from her husband's parish.
